People, Places & Quilts did not start out as a fabric store. When we opened in 1990 (Hurricane Hugo delayed plans of a 1989 opening) we sold only folk art and antique quilts and were one of several businesses in the Old Cauthen’s hardware store building in historic downtown Summerville. That lasted for three years until a friend came to me and said: “Diane, all the fabric stores around here have closed. You’ve got to open a fabric shop. You have the space here and you like to make quilts.”
