The Flower Pavilion at Short Central
Designed by Epstein Architecture
Inspired by familiar architectural forms and crafted from locally sourced Summerville materials, the new Short Central entertainment pavilion beautifully blends functional architecture with civic sculpture. Conceived as an abstracted flower an homage to Summerville’s identity as “Flowertown” the design weaves its symbolism into every element.
At its base, a graceful semicircular seat wall evokes an open flower basket, inviting visitors to gather, sit, and linger. From this “basket” rise splayed wooden supports reminiscent of flower stems, lending the structure strength and organic elegance. Above, a gently curved roof forms a broad, protective leaf, casting shade and shelter, while three sculpted ceiling canopies reach outward as oversized flower petals projecting the sound of live performances into the heart of downtown.
Reminiscent of Summerville’s gardens, porches, and storied past, the pavilion stands as a living emblem of place. It is at once refuge and stage, landmark and threshold, art and gathering space an enduring symbol of a downtown in bloom and a community rooted in history yet always reaching toward a vibrant future.
After we announced the project at DREAM Fire and Ice 2025, we immediately received communication from Summerville companies asking what they could do to assist, and all of them are making considerable donations in staff and construction materials.
